EFT Tapping for Grief: Finding Peace When the Pain of Loss Feels Overwhelming

Have you ever wondered why grief feels so different from one day to the next? You miss someone deeply, but you also feel angry, guilty, confused, relieved, or unsure what to do with everything that has changed. Just when life begins to feel a little more grounded, a photograph, familiar place, song, or memory suddenly brings your loss close again.

Grief is not something you can just "get over." There are many layers of grief that can be triggered by memories, regrets, beliefs, and older emotional wounds, which compound what you are going through. EFT tapping for grief gives you gentle, effective, compassionate support through each layer, one at a time, without forcing yourself to feel differently before you are ready.

The Many Layers of Grief

The pain of missing someone can be difficult enough on its own. Grief may become more complicated when you experience guilt, anger, fear, regret, or even relief about the loss. You replay conversations, question decisions, or judge yourself for the way you are coping.

You might think, "I should have called more," or "I should be handling this better by now." You may feel angry and then guilty for feeling angry, or wonder whether having a good day means you are leaving the person behind. If your loss still feels unresolved, grief and loss counseling helps you find comfort, understanding, and relief with the many ways grief shows up.

There are over 40 different kinds of losses

We are constantly growing and in transition, and grief is, and always will be, part of our life. Of course we are going to have grief over losing a loved one to death, but we can experience grief over the end of a meaningful relationship, a career, children leaving home, a beloved pet, losing a business, income, a home, divorce, or a significant health challenge and diagnosis. Any life transition can bring grief with it.

When Doctors Diagnose Grief as Depression

Doctors often diagnose grief as depression and prescribe antidepressants. Depression itself is often caused by underlying feelings, beliefs, and trauma that were never acknowledged, healed, and expressed. When grief, anger, or fear have nowhere to go, these feelings don't disappear — if we don't have the means to work them out, they stay in the body and look exactly like depression.

We feel depressed, down, sad, overwhelmed — stuck in a loop that is hard to get out of alone. No wonder it feels like too much when your whole world has been turned upside down..

Medication might help treat some of the symptoms, and I am not against it if it is the only way you can function — but wouldn't it feel better if you had supportive help to work through and heal all the feelings that you have? This is part of why I trained in Grief Recovery alongside EFT, IFS, and Matrix Reimprinting: grief responds to action, not only understanding. Together, these approaches address several aspects of what you are experiencing. You are met with patience and compassion as we work through them; you will see movement in those feelings and start to feel better.

How EFT Tapping Helps With Grief

EFT, or Emotional Freedom Techniques, uses gentle tapping on acupressure points while you focus on a feeling, thought, memory, or physical sensation. It is not tapping to erase the loss or make yourself stop caring. The idea is to work with the emotional intensity of what has happened.

For example, “I am grieving my husband” may feel much too broad. “I feel a tightness in my chest every time I think about our last conversation” gives you a more specific place to begin. You might also tap on guilt, anger, or the loneliness that appears at night. I talk more about how feelings can shift and reveal another layer in EFT and the Apex Effect.

Beliefs Underlying Grief

Loss may also affect what you believe about yourself, your relationships, and the future. Thoughts such as "If I had done more, they would still be here" or "If I start enjoying my life, I am betraying them" can become closely connected to the pain. You might also feel that you have to stay strong for everyone else.

When beliefs are tied to strong emotion, simply telling yourself to think differently may not reach what is underneath them. It is more effective to acknowledge the belief rather than argue with it. You might tap with, "Part of me still believes I should have done more," and notice what comes up. I explain more about this work in releasing limiting beliefs with Matrix Reimprinting and EFT.

Your pain may also connect to a sense of loyalty. If you let go of the grief, you may fear the bond is weakening too. But love does not need constant suffering as proof that someone mattered. You can carry the memories and relationship without carrying every painful emotion at the same intensity forever.

A significant loss can also add to feelings that began long before the current event — an older experience of abandonment, loneliness, or not feeling supported. Losing a parent may bring up feelings from childhood; losing a partner may touch an older fear of being left. Not every intense grief reaction has roots in the past, but a present loss can land on an already wounded place. EFT can help heal both.

Grief Has No Fixed Timeline

It is easy to ask yourself when you should finally be "over it." That question creates another kind of pressure, particularly if you compare yourself to others who seem to have returned to their normal lives. Grief doesn’t follow a straight path. A peaceful week may be followed by a difficult birthday, anniversary, holiday, or ordinary afternoon — and a difficult day does not erase the healing that has already happened.

Instead of asking, 'Why am I not over this yet?' you might ask, 'What is hurting right now?"

Finding peace with grief is not the same as reaching a point where you never feel sad again. Peace shows up in smaller ways — looking at a photograph and feeling warmth before the sadness, or telling a story about the person and laughing without immediately feeling guilty. Grief might still come, and love may still ache. The difference is that these feelings do not have to take over every part of you whenever they appear. It can mean letting the love and memories remain while the guilt, fear, anger, and emotional intensity soften. Grief and peace can exist in the same life.
