Religious Trauma Recovery Coaching

Religious trauma can be hard to name, especially when faith, family, and identity are so intertwined. What once felt safe or certain can start to feel confusing, painful, and hard to trust.

The pain might come from control, shame, fear-based teaching, spiritual manipulation, or the sense that questions weren't safe to ask. Or it might be the weight of feeling judged or responsible for pleasing God, leaders, or community.

Religious trauma recovery coaching offers a safe space to untangle what happened and begin to heal.

Something in you is asking to be healed. Not managed, not understood, but actually released.

When Faith Has Been Tied to Fear

Faith can bring comfort, meaning, and connection. But when faith is taught or lived through fear, shame, pressure, or control, it leaves deep emotional scars.

A person may grow up believing that love is conditional, that questions are rebellion, that rest is laziness, or that their worth depends on obedience, performance, purity, silence, or service. Over time, these messages become part of your nervous system.

Religious trauma is not always caused by one clear event. Sometimes it builds slowly through repeated experiences. Being shamed for doubt. Being pressured to forgive before feeling ready or acknowledged for an injustice perpetuated on you.  Being told to submit when something feels wrong. Being taught that God is about punishment, rejection, or being disappointed in you.

These experiences shape how you see yourself, your relationships, authority, and God.

You still long for spiritual connection, but feel anxious around prayer, church, Scripture, worship, or religious language. You want peace, but feel torn between what you were taught and what your heart now needs. Perhaps you feel guilty for questioning, grieving, or stepping back.

How Religious Trauma Can Show Up

Religious trauma does not always look like losing faith. Sometimes it looks like anxiety, guilt, people-pleasing, perfectionism, shame, or fear of making the wrong choice.

You might feel any of these issues below:

  • anxious or angry when you pray, read Scripture, attend church, or hear certain religious phrases.
  • guilty for resting, setting boundaries, and saying no.
  • you struggle to trust your own thoughts, feelings, or instincts because you learned to doubt yourself.
  • afraid of punishment, rejection, or disappointing God.
  • find it hard to separate God from people who hurt, control, or shame you.
  • pressure to forgive quickly, be quiet, stay loyal, or make peace before you are ready, at a huge cost to you.
  • you avoid spiritual spaces completely, even if part of you still longs for connection.
  • torn between anger, grief, love, fear, and hope.

These responses are not signs of failure. They are signs that something sacred was mixed with rejection and pain. Your whole self needs time and support to sort through it.

AN Invitation

If any of this sounds familiar, it doesn't mean something is wrong with you.

It means there is a part inside needing to heal. It can be hard to know whether it's time to do something about it, or who to trust with it when you do. We can hop on a no-pressure 20-minute call. You can ask me anything, and we'll see if we're a good fit to work together. I'd love to speak with you.

If You Feel Guilty for Questioning

Questioning can feel frightening when you learned that questions meant rebellion, weakness, or a lack of faith.

You wonder if you're being disrespectful. You might fear that God is disappointed in you. And you worry that stepping back from certain teachings, leaders, or communities means losing something important.

Questions are a part of our growth in our relationship with God. It is how we develop a deeper, more meaningful relationship.

Questioning and listening to the small, still voice within can help you separate love from control, conviction from shame, truth from fear, and faith from pressure.

Guilt may appear because an older part of you learned that safety came from staying compliant. It may have learned to avoid conflict, obey quickly, keep quiet, say you forgive, or ignore discomfort in order to remain accepted.

That part does not need to be judged. It needs compassion.

The deeper work is not about pushing you toward or away from faith. It is about helping you feel safe, to have someone accept you and listen compassionately without judgement. In that space, begin releasing the fear and shame that may have become attached to God, spirituality, or your own sense of worth.

You are allowed to heal at a pace that feels safe. You are allowed to decide what is true for you now.

How I Help?

I’m Gail Mae. For over 15 years, I’ve helped people release the emotional patterns, fears, and beliefs that keep them feeling stuck.

In religious trauma recovery coaching, we work gently with the fear, shame, guilt, grief, anger, and confusion that may still be held in your body and emotions. We do not rush your process. We do not force forgiveness. And we do not tell you what your faith has to look like.

I use EFT, also known as Emotional Freedom Techniques or Tapping, to help calm the nervous system and release the emotional pain connected to religious fear, shame, guilt, spiritual pressure, and traumatic memories. EFT is an evidence-based technique supported by a growing body of clinical research, and is used by psychologists, therapists, and health professionals to address anxiety, trauma, and stress.

I also use Matrix Reimprinting when the trauma is connected to a specific memory or earlier experience. With tapping, we heal the traumatic imprints in your body, soul, and spirit.

I use IFS — Internal Family Systems. When you feel pulled in different directions — part of you still longs for faith and connection, while another part feels angry, afraid to ask questions, or run from anything that feels unsafe — we meet each of these feelings with compassion rather than judgment.

Grief Recovery informs all my work. There is grief in all aspects of our lives, and especially when we are in the process of healing and letting go. In healing, you are always held in a sacred, respectful, and non-judgmental space.

Gail has been a cornerstone in my life over the last few years.

She has been instrumental in helping me navigate the challenges that life has thrown my way, helping me cope with grief and difficulties of change, and helping me better decipher how my emotions may be getting in the way of my potential.

Gail’s spirituality and faith are inspiring, and I look forward to learning from her in each of our sessions together. She has taught me practical tools that have made me better equipped to let go and reduce my anxieties.

I will forever be grateful to Gail as our work together has not only impacted my self-esteem and self-worth so positively, but it has also significantly bettered my relationship with my family and my outlook on what life has in store for me.
